Ponniyin Selvan is an Indian historical fiction navel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy during 1950. The book is set in the 10th and 11th centuries, where it covers the life of Arulmozhivarman (later crowned as Rajaraja Chola I), one of the greatest kings who ruled south India.
An epic tale of mystery, drama and courage amidst political conspiracies, love interests and otherworldly struggles. The story follows the turmoil and power struggle inside Chola Dynasty, as what must be done to ascend Aditya returns home at last.
The richness of this novel lies in that it gives very detailed descriptions on Chozha culture, the customs and traditions followed by ancient South Indians. The author has obviously done his research to make this era come alive, and it comes across realistic scenery and relevant facets of the characters.
It also excels in character development. Characterization is also well done, with each character having multiple layers of personality, motivations and virtues/flaws. The nobel-hearted protagonist, the cunning antagonist—it's all great stuff that just enriches the entire experience.
Another thing that was really well executed in this novel, is the pacing of it — there are so many plot twists and turns to keep the reader invested. It is written simply, but delightful and as long bibliophiles — we enjoy that.
In total, Ponniyin Selvan is a work of art in the style of historical fiction that will make you feel as if though it may trap yourself intoa couple of centuries ago. It keep attracting readers until forever DISCLAIMED
